Favosites is an extinct species of coral that existed over 100 million years ago. It was filled with many long hollow canals, that in most other fossil specimens are of its kind are filled in with more traditional stones associated with fossils. Because of the hollow canals, quartz, calcite & barite grew inside of them (like geodes) until they overgrew their host rock and the crystal points emerged out of the top! This particular specimen is believed to be from the Devonian Period, which was about 358-420 MILLION YEARS AGO. Hand mined by me in the US.
